Electric Bicycles
Electric bicycles are bicycles with an electric motor used to power the vehicle, or to assist with pedaling, and are one type of motorized bicycle.
Most electric bikes can be classified as zero-emissions vehicles since they emit no combustion byproducts, have a significantly lower environmental impact and are seen as environmentally desirable in an urban environment.
In many parts of the world, they are classified as bicycles so they are not subject to the same laws as motor vehicles. However, you should check with your local motor vehicle office for legal jurisdiction in your area.
Worldwide use of electric bicycles has grown rapidly since 1998. In 2010, it is estimated that sales in the USA will double the amount sold last year.
